Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) has been around since the 1950's but was commercialised after over 20 years later. Nowadays they are manufactured using a gel spinning process.

The nature of UHMWPE is so that it gives a very high level of crystallinity after polymerisation allowing it to be able to bear large loads exerted onto it.
